This Just In: C[ar]rap Still Sucks.
Yeah, yeah, I know; the Astros are only four games back in the wild-card after beating up on the AAA Pirates, blah blah blah. It's not that I don't think they can catch up. Well, actually, I guess it is that I don't think they can catch up. There are still a gazillion teams ahead of them in the wild-card standings. I'll dare to think "wild card" if and when we first get back to .500.
In the interim, let's talk football... briefly. It's refreshing to see all of the "Texans are headed to the Super Bowl" call-in show pundits coming back to earth after last night's 17-14 loss to the Broncos. Sure, it was only a three-point loss and all, blah blah blah. But our first-team offense pretty much couldn't have looked any worse than it did last night. Don't let David C[ar]rap's 15-for-22, 128 yard "passing" performance fool you: the vast majority of those "passes" were dumps and screen passes to Wali Lundy. They technically qualify as "passes" because, at the time, Lundy was too far away to accept a handoff from C[ar]rap.
The franchise quarterback managed no touchdowns and got picked once, on a tipped pass that should never have been thrown; he could/should have been picked at least twice more when he showed awful decision-making. He threw off-target and low to other receivers. He fumbled (although it blessedly went out of bounds). He panicked in the pocket again. He got sacked some more.
I have yet to see any real progress from him; he still pretty much resorts to one of these decisions on every play:
A. Hand the ball off.
B. Dump the ball off to a back.
C. Throw out of bounds.
D. Get sacked.

I remain unimpressed with Phillip Buchanan as a DB. We'll probably have to hope that he helps out in the punt-returning business, and will ultimately chalk the failed "Buchanan-as-DB" experiment up to a bad personnel move by the former administration.
Other than Buchanan, I was relatively happy with our defense's showing last night. Alas, Dunta can't play all eleven positions at once... nor can he cover all of the opposing team's eligible receivers. DeMeco Ryans showed promise, too. The defense gave off some pretty good vibes.
That offense, though.... it pretty much still sucks.
